As a tax professional, you are required to submit an identifying number on each tax return you are paid to prepare. This number is either your Social Security Number or a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).
If you do not want to disclose your Social Security Number on the returns you prepare, you can get a PTIN number to use instead. The PTIN number does not take the place of your employer identification number that is used to identify the tax preparation firm.
Certain states and localities may not accept a PTIN as satisfying the requirement for a preparer tax identification number on their tax returns.
