Filing Status

What is Filing Status?

Filing status is used to determine your filing requirements, standard deduction, eligibility for certain tax breaks, and your correct tax amount.

There are five different filing statuses and choosing the right filing status for your situation is important. There's “Single,” for unmarried or separated individuals; “Head of Household,” for unmarried or separated individuals who care for child dependents; “Married Filing Jointly,” for married couples filing on a single tax return; “Married Filing Separately,” for married couples filing on different tax returns; and “Qualifying Surviving Spouse” (formerly “Qualifying Widow or Widower,”) for the surviving spouse to use for the first two years after losing their spouse if they are caring for child dependents.
