Standard Deduction

The standard deduction is a tax break that reduces your taxable income. The amount of the deduction is based on your filing status and you don’t have to fill out a Schedule or form to claim it. It is automatically applied unless you choose to itemize deductions on Schedule A. Most taxpayers have a higher standard deduction than their combined itemized deductions; therefore, they can simply claim the automatic standard deduction.
