What is an audit?

An audit is an additional review or examination of your financial information by the IRS to make sure that your tax return information is accurate and complete. Some audits are randomly selected, and some are due to conflicting or potentially incomplete information on your tax return. If you are audited, you will be notified through the mail—not through any electronic communication—and the letter will explain the nature of the audit and provide further instructions.
