Married Filing Jointly vs. Separate Filing Status

Married Filing Jointly is a filing status for legally married couples that file together using one tax return. The standard deduction is higher for couples that file jointly, and there are more tax breaks available for filing jointly.

Some couples may not want to file a joint return, and Married Filing Separately is also an option. The standard deductions will be lower for each spouse, however, and they will not qualify as a married couple for certain tax breaks.

Filing separately rarely achieves a net tax benefit for married couples but there are certain cases where it makes sense.
